Was ist überhaupt ein Spiel? Als eine Ursache für das gegenseitige Missverstehen von Spielern und Nicht-Spielern kann sicherlich auch der Umstand angeführt werden, dass diese Frage im öffentlichen Diskurs selten differenziert beantwortet oder überhaupt konsequent erörtert wird. Demgegenüber kursieren zumeist sehr einseitige Definitionsvorschläge, z.B. die Vorstellung, das Spiel sei ein geschlossener virtueller Raum, in welchen man vollkommen einzutauchen vermag und der das Gegenteil (eine Parallelwelt) von ernsthaftem, wirklichem Handeln darstellt.
